weekly 6: xin xin

In general, I'm a pretty unconcerned person when it comes to worrying about internet surveillance. It probably has to do with the fact that I don't do anything worth surveilling combined with the privilege that comes with where I'm at in society as a straight white woman from the U.S. I'm also pretty apolitical on social media because I'm involved in journalism and don't want to imply conflicts of interest, so there isn't anything particularly provocative about me that would incite any super malicious tracking/hacking/etc.

Because of this stance, I'll keep using the Chrome add-ons we installed, but I'm probably not going to use more inconvenient stuff like the encrypted messaging app. I'm already somewhat careful about what I send online since people can technically request to see any records/messages associated with Daily Bruin accounts, so using a whole new app that none of my friends are on that would screw up all my group chats doesn't really seem worth it to me.

Similarly, while the "dat" concept is really cool, I probably won't use it too much since so few people are working with the technology at the moment. I'll keep everything installed in case the movement spreads, but for now, I'll mostly be sticking with https.
