Weekly 2: Derive

The following links are a constructed derive for users other than myself. Ugly Delicious is a show that I marathoned from the living room of a cozy AirBnB in Iceland over spring break. There's a good amount food porn, but what I enjoyed most was its exploration of the sociopolitical context behind foods we as Americans take for granted. Some of the more memorable things I learned involved Viet-Viet-Cajun cuisine, about the Chinese and Lebanese immigrants in Mexico, and the fact that black slaves in the American South were forbidden from keeping cows or pigs but were allowed to keep chickens. Just think on that last part for a moment...

Somehow, fried chicken and its associated stereotypes just don't mean the same thing to me after learning that.
