WEEK 2

REFLECTION

In the article “The Male Gazed” by Kate Losse I thought it was interesting to look at Facebook through a gender point of view. I never really thought about the fact that Facebook started as a female appearance-rating site and then turned into a profile social media platform. I think it’s a bit of a generalization to say that women are under more scrutiny for their looks than men because I know many males that put a lot of attention into their social media platforms. However I can see how Facebook could be used as way to target women and their appearances. These ideas of privacy are carried over into the article “Think You can Live Offline Without Being Tracked?” by Sarah Kessler. I found this article to be more disturbing because as someone with a very large Internet presence I don’t think about the security behind the platforms I am using, nor do I really want to. I find that the internet and it’s privacy goes beyond my understanding so it’s a bit scary to know all the ways people are able to intrude on those privacies.
