La Boheme, Act 1. Paris, mid XIX Century. It's Christmas Eve at Marcelo's garret. Rodolfo and Marcelo, the two bohemian friends, depart about love and the freezing cold of the parisian night. Rodolfo writes at the table, and Marcelo is finishing a painting. At the end of the act, Mimi arrives and Rodolfo falls in love with her. The last scene takes place down stage left.
The same set is used for Act 4. Mimi is dying of consumption. The bed will be placed by the window, and the scene resolves around her until she died in Rodolfo's arms.
La Boheme, Act 2. A busy crowd is swarming about the area where the Cafe Momus stands. Vendors, soldiers, civilians, children, students, are all about. To add to the holiday confusion, a patrol marches into the scene, trailed by a crowd of youngsters. Rodolfo, Mimi and the Bohemians are at one of the tables in the cafe. The marching band will cross the scene, up the stairs and disappear back stage.
La Boheme, Act 3. It's February. The ecstatic love between Rodolfo and Mimi has been tainted with quarrelling. Several times they have almost separated. Mimi goes to the tavern (stage left) where Marcello makes a life painting warriors on the facade. Day is beginning to break; it is bleak and bitter cold. Paris is just opening its gates (stage right); sweepers and women carrying foodstuffs are admitted through the gate.
