TOOLS I WON'T USE

COOKIES

One of the most interesting things that I learned from this week’s lecture is the idea of cookies. When I join a new site or log onto that site, I automatically accept cookies. It has never registered with me that cookies are being automatically put onto my web browser and the data of which site I go to, when, and where is being given back to the site’s server. Although cookies allow us to easily navigate the web, they are, in actual, a violation of privacy. I don’t know if I am going to continue to enable cookies on my websites. I think that I would rather take extra time navigating the web than giving people information on my web activity.

PCP

Another thing that I really like is PCP. PCP is tool that allows the user to encrypt their email. I think that this is so important because usually, emails pass through different servers and network before their reach their intended destinations. While they are traveling, hackers can see what I am writing someone else, which violates my privacy. By encrypting my emails, someone can't see what I am actually writing. The only person that can see it is the intended receiver of the email because the PCP decrypts the email. I think that this is so cool. Maybe I am naive, because I automatically assumed that emails were private because I wasn't sending it publicly, but I am going to start giving people my PCP KEY.
