The words beautiful and ugly in regards to aesthetics don’t really mean anything to me anymore. Usually I’m trying to guess what other people think of an image. It depends what community I am thinking about. At first glanse, I dislike the first photo here of the hill. It feels like whoever manipulated it is trying to hard, and that factors into my decision to say that it feels a little tropey. This reaction of mine relates to how Nick Douglas explains the ’minimal effort’ aesthetic. the minimal effort aesthetic shields a work from any aesthetic critisism because it appears as though no thought was ever put into the creation of the work. The second photo is from an art student promoting a show, and it takes after the interent ugly aesthtic very plainly with its ms paint style icons. Each face is imperfect and different. I don’t know whether I can say if this is the ugly photo or if the first one is, as the classification of aesthetic beauty, at least for myself, is very social. Most of the time I have no true opinion, I am usually more interested in what is being said. Most things are kind of ugly.
