Weekly 8
Reflect on what data is included or omitted from your Project 2, and in what ways you became more intimate with or distanced from the participants or subject by measuring, quantifying, or visualizing the data.
In Project 2, the data that we have collected was all of the ping pong statistics of female players in the United States; however, the only data that was shown in Project 2 was Haolin Fang's ping pong data. By researching Haolin Fang's ping pong statistics and data, we got to learn about Haolin Fang's life outside of school. We found out that she had stopped playing ping pong tournaments but still play for fun and also found out that she got to practice with one of the people she looked up to. At first, we were worried that intruding her ping pong life would actually harm her but in reality, she had really REALLY admired the project.
Within the Mimi Onuoha video, I really admired how she emphasized the importance of collecting data. Without the data, there would be no visualizations for the data (which is a given) but what intrigued me was that when working on Project 2, most of the data visualizations came from the actual data that we had looked up. In the end, the data that we had collected influenced the data visuals for the project.
