This is NOT Weekly 1

For this first Weekly I took a internet dérive through an exploration into how to not get lost on the internet. Could someone really get "Lost" in the internet when never have to leave your seat?

My First Internet Steps

I started out by googling how to not get lost on the internet. I was hoping to find articles and forums with conversations about how the internet has changed the way people learn. Google is my most commonly used search engine and a perfect place to start.

A Question to the internet by the internet

Photo of Me

I found an article on Quora about why it's so easy to get lost on the internet. Quora crowdsources questions from anyone anywhere, revealing varying answers and opinions. Because it is crowdsourced it's hard to pin down one correct answer, especially to a question as vague as this one. I also think it's interesting how mr. Simon Beuller, poses his answer to the question. His argument contains two parts; that the internet is free and requires no effort (relatively) and that the internet is smart at collecting rare and fatty "Stuff" that are appealing to the mind, for example: Gore, Sex, Love. Simons examples are Porn and Cats.

Nicholas Cage? What'd the internet do to you?

Photo of Me

I found a more sophisticated answer by an international business developer, Christian Bazan, who lead me to another article "This is your brain online”. This article attracted me at first because I thought it was written by Nicholas Cage, and I was thinking, wtf did Nicholas Cage write about the internet. Another classic internet moment when something catches your eye and turns out to be different than expected. I think it’s interesting how Mr.Bazar brings up the elephant in the room and the negative affect of the internet on our minds. I can completely understand that an average person can be misinformed even brainwashed by internet culture.

Is Google Making Us Stupid?

Photo of Me

So of course I follow Nicholas Cage's article, which is actually written by Nicholas Carr. And as I skim along I immediately see “Is Google Making Us Stupid.” As a huge Google fan myself I couldn’t leave that article unread. Is Google making us stupid? or are we making ourselves stupid with google? or is Google the stupid one?

We're making the internet and ourselves stupid...

Photo of Me

I don’t believe google is making us stupid, rather we are using google in stupid ways / the internet and web trash is cluttering our space and making us stupid. Without experience of quality information vs Internet trash, we are collectively becoming stupid. Because things arrive immediately at the touch of our fingers, we aren’t challenging ourselves to find the truth in certain matters. As internet loves we love the rare fatty entertainment the internet can bring; Porn, Cats falling, free music, etc…

Who's in control now, will the internet be our own Hal from Space Oddessy?

Photo of Me

I’m unsure whether Google is like HAL from A Space Odyssey, or if we’re using google to create an internet equivalent of HAL to then feed ourselves internet trash and misinformation.

Google and Facebook Failed Us

Photo of Me

At the bottom of the article I found another link to another article titled: Google and Facebook Failed Us. I wonder who this author is referring to, but it sounds like the general populous.

But did they really?

Photo of Me

This author is crediting Google and Facebook for the spread of misinformation. However what role do google and facebook play, they arn't the editors of a magazine or NPR, they are a means to spread just as a road is a means to get from place to place. You can't blame the road if people are driving the wrong way.... should we have signs and rules on the road? I guess we'll soon find out

there's nothing left here, you might as well leave leave
