On the morning of February 22, 1983 a little girl named Candice Michelle Baucham was born to the parents of Bennie and Patty Baucham. Born and raised in Southern California, Candice grew up in a loving home as the youngest of three. A book worm was not the type of child Candice was. She was always very active, playing tag with her brother, sister, and friends. She was often filled with laughter brought on by her families comic manner. Laughter was not the only thing that she remembers about her childhood. As a child, values were instilled in her. She was taught that family was important, never to quit, and treat others the way you want to be treated. One thing's for sure in the Baucham house; that they remembered to always be there for each other.
Her athlete career started at the age 6 when she began gymnastics. Her mother was influential in her start as an athlete. Her mother felt that Candice was a bit to shy and needed to blossom as an individual. She felt sports would indeed be helpful in building her character. Candice enjoyed tumbling and doing floor routines. Her love for the sport grew over the years but upon entering the 7th grade, she decided that it was time to stop. As a Southern California native, Candice attended Lomita Magnet Elementary School in which she took accelerated educational classes. Her family then moved to Long Beach where she attended Hughes Middle School. As she grew more into herself, Candice felt she could make her own decisions as a young adolescent. She wanted to be cheerleader, but her mother stepped in and pushed Candice to stay active by competing in track in 8th grade. She became an active participant in track running the 400m dash and sprint relays. Surprisingly enough, Candice never did any jumping.
Highly known for great track and field athletes, Candice joined the track team at Long Beach Poly High School. She was a member of the frosh/soph team for two years, but was frequently working with the varsity team as an alternate going to prestigious meets. She not only accelerated in her development as an athlete, but also as a student heavily involved in clubs and accelerated educational programs on campus such as C.I.C. Candice was know to her teachers as an exceptional student, but most importantly as a true born leader. Her ability to lead carried on to the track team as a captain her senior year. She was known to her friends and teammates as someone that was a great competitor with a gentle spirit that touched everyone around her.
Now as a young woman, Candice looks at her college experience as a true testimony as to how she has grown not just as an athlete, but as a person. She considers herself to have learned patience and having become more excepting of others. She has gone back to the family values that she was taught, therefore building principles of her own to live by. Having been blessed with phenonomenal talent, she now appreciates all the many gifts and people God has given her. Her maturity has polished her spirit. Candice has become and is becoming a better person everyday by having disciplined and nurtured herself to be the true essence of a female athlete.
