Weekly 6 — Decentralized Networks and Privacy

For the first half of Xin Xin's talk, she showed us chrome extensions including HTTPS and Chrome Extensions Badger that block first and third party cookies. Her talk made me realize how careless I tend to be with my information on the web.

During the second half, she introduced decentralized networks. Her talk cleared up some things about Dat and Peer-to-peer which had been unclear to me before. I like the idea of allowing shared access to files rather than relying on a central server such as Facebook or Instagram, allowing those creating the files to maintain ownership of the data. I most likely won’t be using Dat in the near future but I am interested to see how it develops as it becomes more publicly accessible and attains a larger user base.
