Weekly 8 — Project 2 Conclusion

In our project, Connie and I collected data from the iNaturalist API. We included the images that people uploaded onto the site, as well as the location of the sighting, while omitting the user’s name, the date and time of the sighting and post submission. We also omitted the name of the species, however as Will suggested in critique, this information may be important to include in a later iteration of the project. By taking these images and turning them into a personalized drawing tool of the animals and plants in my area, I felt that I was able to become more intimate with the data. Although we did not personally collect our data as Mimi Onuoha does hers, I am very intrigued by how iNaturalist collects their data from user uploads — I think that it’s a smart and easy way to collect a large amount of data especially when trying to collect data from private property.
