We often find ourselves challenged by the binary scales that society uses to represent identity demographics. What happens when the scales become arbitrary?

We asked a group of 60 individuals to think of a circle as the society they live in, however they imagine it and plot their feeling of personal advantage, feeling of safety, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and political leaning in relation to their personal identity.

This project an abstract visualization that depicts socio-cultural identity in relationship to the society that we live in, and explores new ways to ask these questions. The results have been vizualized in two ways: by category and by individual.

It is a response to the restricted ways in which individuals' identities are traditionally surveyed (for example, on forms with a list of checkboxes), by removing conventional demographic identifiers and thereby asking individuals to contextualize themselves as opposed to being placed into a context.
