Over winter break I was trying to code my own website and I wanted it to have an old-school look to it. this article helped me define the aesthetic I had in mind. The style of the web page elements that were discussed in this piece has put my search to an end. It was a similar feeling to finding that song that stuck in your head but you’re not sure what to search for. It was interesting to see these elements defined through Lialina’s perspective.
My personal memories of these web styles were formed when I was able to form memories. So, my personal analysis of these classic web styles is more of fever dreamish blur than a nostalgic reminiscing. But, I with the authors' claim, that the web lacks the personality it once had. Much like what happened with Instagram, the web was taken over by corporations and businesses, resulting in a design standard for webpages that are focused on selling products rather than expressing their feelings.
I also think since the invention of Instagram, MySpace, Facebook, etc. there has been a decline in people's knowledge of coding and creating a personalized page or site. The aforementioned social media companies have successfully eliminated the need for people to customize their web pages and therefore no one knows how to or even wants to personalize a web space.
