In a decontamination effort, the top 16 inches of topsoil were removed from Bikini and Enyu Islands (the traditionally habited islands of the atoll), which was then spread across the sandbar between the two islands to make a more accessable landbridge. Exposure to the radioation comes from eating a steady diet of fruit and vegetables grown in irradiated top soil, which is why the topsoil and vegetation was replaced in the systematic grid seen above.
