A pencil is recognized as a necessity for traditional artists, and until recently, was my preferred medium. Unlike pens or markers, mistakes could be easily erased. However, perfectionism is a double-edged sword. While it can result in polish, it can also paralyze and cause obsessive repetition. Constructed with hundreds of pencils and a blank canvas, this hanging installation emulates that trapped emotion. Though it appears pristine from the outside, the interior is sharp, intrusive and has a manifestation of fear on the ceiling, painted while I was inside. The painting isn’t visible from the exterior— the audience is unable to understand unless they enter to experience it themselves. By attaching my mental block to a physical object, then destroying and vandalizing it, this piece acts as a cathartic release.
