Monique Marie Henderson was born February 18, 1983 to Adam and Elaine Henderson. Monique grew up in the heart San Diego, Bonita City. Her future distinctively looked bright so early in life. Living in a house hold full of girls and being the youngest, she was definitely a daddy's girl. Her dad had ran track as a young man and had carried on his love for the sport to his three girls. As working parents, Adam and Elaine always provided a safe and loving home for their children, while pushing them to excel in the game of life.
When Monique became the age 6, her exposure to track and field began. She ran age group track. As a youngster, she was quick from the start and set all age group records. At the age of 8, her father began his track team for his eldest daughter, not knowing then that his youngest would be his rising star. Monique continued running age group track during her school days at Paradise Hills Elementary school and Alexander Graham Bell Junior High. Even as a young adolescent, Monique knew she was fast having never lost a race. Despite her many accomplishments, her parents taught her to be humble and to be grateful for her talent by not taking it for granted as a true gift from God.
Upon entering Morse High School, Monique decided to stop running age group track and join her high school team. Her coach, Gary McDonald served as not just a coach, but a mentor and friend, allowing her to have confidence in herself and achieve her dreams no matter who the competition was. Her peers admired Monique for her success and was seen as someone who believed in perseverance. It was important to represent herself not just on the track as an up and coming speed diva, but also as an exemplary student. Monique always, put her school work first. Her teachers were amazed by her dedication and dicispline. During her high school years, Monique had a goal to attend a great university to experience life and track on a different level. She wanted her talent to speak for itself. She knew that she had to perform well in school first, while her talent in track would give her the opportunity to receive a full scholarship to any school of her choice.
Monique had made her decision to join the many great athletes that have surfaced frequently at UCLA. Her college experience thus far has given Monique a new perspective on life. Monique has taken every frustration and victory as an example to keep believing as her friends and family do of her. Having been referred to as the next great sprint sensation for the United States, Monique continuously motivates the track and field world with her phenomenal talent and humility. Her dedication to her training and to herself demonstrates her ability to achieve success to her fullest potential. Her list of accomplishments show her consistence and development as a specialist in the 400m. She marks the beginning of new generation that sets the standard for other 400m runners to reach for. Monique is technically, physically, and mentally sound which allows her to be a great example of strength, power, and speed in a world with many athletes, but few prestigious champions. All these reasons prove that she will be a great candidate in representing a company or foundation that plans to dominate their field and rise above their competitors as she does in track.
