Background

The development of Shaanxi South Road began in 1911 when it was built by the French Concession's Municipal Council as an extension beyond the concession's boundaries. Tongji University's predecessor, the German Medical School, was located here, and the street was initially named Avenue Paulun after Dr. Paulun, the German founder of the school.

The road became one of the major north-south thoroughfares of the French Concession. When the Wang Jingwei regime took over the French Concession in 1943, it was renamed Xianyang Road, and in 1946, it was renamed Shaanxi South Road.

Resident's floral home

People call it Shanghai's Monet's Garden. An old gentleman took care of many flowers and bonsai. Could be purchased too. Creepers crawl all over the walls and windows, with a lonesome feeling. The large garden is full of weeds and flowers, and the picture is just a corner of the garden. The house would have had an immensely glorious past, but today the house is dilapidated and the front of the house flourishes with flowers.
