Hi.

WEEKLY NINE

Reading “The Facebook Bully" made me miss the days of AOL chatrooms and online social network anonymity. In the ancient times of the late 90s, before digital camera use was very widespread, people could be whoever or whatever they wanted online, but of course this came with its own set of problems. The article hints at a larger social problem of intolerance. I don’t know if a social networking platform can itself be inherently problematic in this way, as the author believes, or if the problem is with the people using the platform and their lack of understanding and compassion. If a platform isn’t inherently problematic, it can certainly enable and even strengthen these social problems. More recently, there have been problems with Facebook allowing fake news to circulate. This brings up extremely complex problems of censorship and media regulation. Meanwhile, the phenomena of (mostly intolerant) fake news being spread on online social networks has proven that a platform can enable the spread of hatred and fear.
