FEB 23 - MARCH 4 2008
AUSTIN, TX (UT HQ)
In early February 2008 I flew to Austin, TX to volunteer with the Obama campaign for the upcoming Democratic Primary. Toward the end of the month I was hired to help open the first official Obama HQ on a university campus at the University of Texas at Austin. Aside from managing the HQ, I decorated the office and designed flyers for various events happening at all universities in Austin.
Decorating the office may sound 'cute' or superfluous, but I took it as an opportunity to reach goals and be efficient. First, I divided the office into the different spaces we would need (ie offices for staff, training area, greet table, relax area, work area, cell phone check out...) and made sure the flow worked well. In these different areas I designed spaces and was able to reinforce people's attitudes while in the office (ie RESPECT, EMPOWER, INCLUDE), give a sense of urgency (ie countdown), create an atmosphere for work and another area to relax and keep the UT students coming back. In retrospect it worked rather well.
During the rush of the week at UT, I designed a shirt for the students that features Obama doing the Hook 'em Horns gesture (a hand gesture resembling the horns of UT's mascot a longhorn) with UT's slogan at the bottom. There were no strictly UT Obama shirts and my student volunteers (who got the shirts for free) were working so hard, I felt they and the rest of the 55,000 UT students deserved a shirt. These shirts helped pay for some of two Obama worker's (one of whom was me) expenses and some went to the Obama campaign.
*Other photos of UT office coming once I find them. Not soon.
